USING NICKNAMES

Registering your nickname provides important benefits.

It guarentees you the use of the name, provided it hasn't already been registered, eliminating potential fraud and preserving your online persona.

It allows you to use two of our other services: ChanServ and MemoServ.

REGISTRATION OF YOUR NICKNAME

Providing that your chosen nickname hasn't already been previously registered then you can tell NickServ to associate it with a password. This needs to be carefully chosen and kept safe as it is impossible to use a registered nickname without it. Anyone with access to, or has guessed, your password can use your nickname with the same authority.

To register your nickname, connect to the IRC under the nickname you would like and type:

/msg NickServ register {password} {email}

You will then receive either confirmation of registration or an error message, usually indicating that the nick is already taken. If this is the case then you need to choose another nick or alter the current one (eg. using a digit on the end) sufficiently and repeat the process.

If you fail to use the nick for 4 weeks then it is automatically de-registered and is available to the next person who requests it. We will not enter into any nickname disputes. If you lose it, through time-lapse or a non-secure password, then you have lost it.

SUBSEQUENT IDENTIFICATION

You are "identified" with your nickname automatically when you register it. A registered and identified nickname gives you access to other services, eg. channel registration. However, as soon as you leave the server then that association is lost and you will need to identify again.

Identification is a quick process, simply type:

/msg NickServ identify {password}

Remembering your password of course! If you cannot remember your password then you are out of luck and you will be unable to access that nickname again.

For extra help, simply type:

/msg nickserv help.
